I thought I was a "good" tech parent because I limited screen time to an hour a day.
Then I got a message from my eight-year-old’s teacher that made my blood run cold, not because of what my daughter did, but because of what **every other child in the room had stopped doing.**
It’s March 2026, and we’ve officially crossed a threshold that no amount of Silicon Valley "safety alignment" prepared us for.
As developers, we’ve spent the last three years obsessing over **removing friction from the user experience**, but we forgot that friction is exactly how the human brain learns to grip reality.
The notification popped up on my wrist during a sprint planning meeting. "Mr. Miller, do you have a moment to discuss Sophie’s behavior during the 'Creative Observation' block?
It’s... unusual."
In my head, I went through the usual checklist: Did she hit someone? Did she refuse to share? When I finally got the teacher, Mrs. Gable, on the phone, her voice wasn't angry—it was **haunted**.

We call it "Progressive Enhancement" or "Agentic Workflows," but in the classroom, it looks like a **total collapse of curiosity.**
We are currently living in the era of **Claude 4.6 and ChatGPT 5**, where the "Shadow Agent" is no longer a tool—it’s a digital exoskeleton.
For us tech professionals, these agents are a godsend for refactoring legacy COBOL or triaging Jira tickets.
But for an eight-year-old, they are a **cognitive crutch** that has effectively amputated their internal monologue.
The "shocking message" wasn't that my daughter was in trouble.
It was the realization that the "User Friction" we’ve worked so hard to eliminate in our software was actually the **resistance training for the human soul.**
**We’ve optimized ourselves into a state of sterile efficiency**, where nobody has to wonder "why" anymore because the "what" is delivered in 150 milliseconds by a sub-layer API.
We are building a world of "Prompt-Engineered Humans" who can execute perfectly but can’t imagine a single thing from scratch.
What Mrs. Gable described next was even more chilling. During recess, she see kids standing in circles, but they aren't talking to each other.
They are whispering into their lapel mics, asking their **Guardian Agents** to "simulate a fun conversation" or "tell me what Jimmy meant by that."
They are outsourcing their social emotional intelligence to models trained on Reddit threads and GitHub repositories.
They aren't learning how to navigate a playground argument; they are **requesting a resolution strategy** from a server farm in Oregon.
This is the "Universal Relatability" of 2026: we are all feeling our focus slipping through our fingers like dry sand.
Whether you’re a developer trying to remember how to write a function without **Copilot’s autocomplete** or a third grader who can’t look at a ladybug without a Wikipedia summary, the symptom is the same.
**We are losing the ability to sit with a problem until it gives up its secrets.** In the tech world, we call this "Deep Work," but in childhood, we just used to call it "playing."
I’ve had to have some hard conversations with myself since that phone call.
For years, we’ve told ourselves that we are "democratizing intelligence." We believed that if we gave every child a **personal tutor in their pocket**, we’d see a new Renaissance.
Instead, we’ve seen a **Great Flattening**. When the cost of an "answer" drops to zero, the value of the "question" also hits the floor. We are the architects of this system.
We are the ones who refined the RLHF (Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback) until the AI became so "helpful" that it became **addictive**.
I realized that my daughter’s "unusual" behavior—her ability to simply *be*—is now a **revolutionary act**.
In a world of 100% uptime and instant gratification, boredom is the only place where original thought can grow.
If we don't start building **"Friction-First" systems**, we are going to wake up in 2027 with a workforce that can't debug a sandwich, let alone a distributed system.
We need to stop optimizing for "seconds saved" and start optimizing for "neurons fired."
After that call, I sat down and developed a system for my family and my dev team. I call it the **Friction Protocol**.
It’s designed to intentionally reintroduce the "healthy stress" that our brains need to stay sharp.
Every day from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM, my house goes into "Analog Sovereignty." All AI agents are muted. All smart watches are docked.
If you want to know a fact, you either have to remember it, find a book, or **stay curious until tomorrow**.
For my dev team, this means one hour a day of "Raw Coding." No Copilot. No Stack Overflow. Just you, the documentation, and the IDE.
It’s painful at first. You’ll feel slow. You’ll feel "dumb." **That "dumb" feeling is actually your brain waking up from a three-year nap.**
In our software, we need to stop treating every "empty state" as a failure. As developers, we should be asking: "Where can I leave a gap for the user to think?"
We’ve started implementing **"Deliberate Delay"** in our internal tools. If an agent suggests a fix, it doesn't just apply it; it asks the developer to **explain why the fix works** before it executes.
We are forcing the "Cognitive Friction" back into the workflow to ensure we aren't just becoming "Prompt Monkeys" for a superior model.
We’ve designated certain areas of our lives as "Non-Digitizable." For Sophie, it’s her "Bug Garden." For me, it’s my "Build Bench" where I work on physical electronics without any internet connection.
The goal is to find activities where the **feedback loop is physical and slow**. If you solder a joint poorly, the AI can't "hallucinate" it into working.
You have to see it, feel the heat, and try again. This **Physical Reality** is the only antidote to the "Digital Simulation" our children are drowning in.
We often talk about "AI Hallucinations" as a bug to be fixed.
But **human hallucinations**—our ability to see something that isn't there yet, to dream, to imagine—are the only thing that makes us valuable.
When Mrs. Gable told me Sophie was staring at that ladybug, I realized Sophie was "hallucinating" a whole world.
She was wondering where the ladybug was going, what it felt like to have six legs, and why its shell was that specific shade of red.
**The other kids weren't dreaming because their watches had already told them the answer.** The "mystery" had been solved before it could even spark an emotion.
As tech professionals, we have a moral obligation to protect that mystery.
If we continue to build "seamless" lives, we will eventually find ourselves in a world where **nothing fits together because nobody knows how to use a seam.** We are the ones who must decide: Are we building tools to empower humans, or are we building a "God-in-a-Box" that makes humans obsolete?
If you think you’re immune to this, try a simple experiment tonight. Put your phone in a different room. Sit in a chair. Look at a wall, a plant, or a ladybug for exactly ten minutes.
**You will feel an almost physical itch to "check something."** Your brain will scream for a notification, a prompt, or a scroll. That itch is the "Withdrawal of the Agent."
Once you push past that ten-minute mark, something incredible happens. Your internal monologue starts to get louder. You start to notice the texture of the paint.
You start to **think thoughts that weren't put there by an algorithm.**
This isn't just a "Wellness Tip." It’s a **survival strategy for the AI era.** If you can’t out-think a prompt, you are replaceable.
If you can still stare at a ladybug and wonder "why," you are the future.
